CERRO CAHUI

The park has a $3.50 entrance fee. Open every day. Hours 6:30 am to 4:00 pm. There is no charge for swimming. The Cerro Cahuí protected Biotope is a tropical rain forest reserve covering 650 hectares. There are two trials within the reserve. Sac o' ox Trail. Length: 4.4Km (2.75 miles), estimated walking time 1 hour 30 minutes and Los Escobos Trail. Length: 6.0 Km (3.75 miles), estimated walking time 2 hours 20 minutes. Both of observations points in Cerro Cahuí will provide you with spectacular views of the lake. Birds are wonderful to watch and hear, and you can likely hear some at this very moment. The best times to observe birds are at sunrise and suset.
Take one of several trails easy walking distance from the hotel. One takes you to the top of a nearby mountain for a view of the sun setting over the lake.   Local guides can be arranged by hotel staff.  Horses are not allowed in the park. Costs are $10-$20 for local spanish speaking (some English) guide for 3 to 4 hr. trip with explanations on the local customs and the many medical plants in the rainforest. This is a birdwatcher's paradise.

Although the park is protected, at this date in many other areas there has been little success in protecting and keeping the rainforest sustainable. The tours run by natives to the area and the wood carving efforts in El Remate are all a part of new ways the local people have been able to survive without cutting back the forest. Security is good in this park. Often tourist police patrol the area making your jungle walk safe

The swimming dock at the entrance of the park is popular and very clear water swimming and a good picnic area.  There are 8 Biotopo protected areas in Guatemala.  Open 6:30 am until sunset. Prefessional guides for birdwatchers cost from $40 to $75. for 3 to 6 hours trip. Park entrance fee is $2.50 for an entrance ticket. You don't pay the entrance fee for swimming.

BIRDWATCHING

Many places have good birding and it is good along the roads. In El Remate especially look along the road to Biotopo Cerro Cahui Park.  There are free bicycles at the hotel.

A two hour boat trip leaving from the hotel in the evening or early mornings takes you across the lake Peten Itza and up some of the small rivers of Ixpop or Ixlu for roosting sites and other birding areas. (Cost $13 per person). Good birdwatching guides who know their birds and speak English cost from $40 to $60 for a 4 to 6 hour trip depending on the number of persons.

The Biotopo Cerro Cahui Park is 2 kms. From the village of El Remate along the lake shore road. The park is controlled by CECON a branch of the Guatemala's University of San Carlos and was established for scientific studies.  It has more than 10 Kms., of well kept hiking trails. Visitors often see howler and spider monkeys, toucans and many varieties of birds, large butterflies, etc.. Birdwatching is common here. There are two high lookout points or "Miradores" where you can get and excellent views of  Lake Peten Itza and the near by lakes of Macanche and Sal Petén.

Come visit our bed and breakfast, stay in our guest house or bungalows and see what a great vacation can be.

This is an atractive area for birding.  See list of birds

This is part of Cerro Cahui
